Max Mathews (1926-2011) was an American engineer at Bell Labs whose MUSIC (1957) was the first widely used computer program for generating sound, and whose later GROOVE system (1970) pioneered real-time computer control of synthesizers — foundational work behind essentially all subsequent computer music.
