Assembled by producers Gert-Jan Blom and Jeff Winner and released in 2000 by the Dutch label Basta Audio Visuals, Manhattan Research, Inc. gathers 122 minutes of previously unreleased recordings Raymond Scott made between 1953 and 1969 at his Manhattan Research, Inc. studio — technical and musical experiments on his self-built instruments, including the Circle Machine, Rhythm Modulator, Bass-Line Generator, Clavivox, and Electronium, alongside excerpts of the commercial jingles and film and television scores those inventions were built to produce, and material from his collaborations with Jim Henson. The compilation was the first wide public exposure to the scale and strangeness of Scott’s private electronic-music research and is widely credited with reviving critical interest in his work.
