John Cage (1912-1992) was an American composer with an interest in aleatoric music, Zen, indeterminacy, mycology, and many other subjects. Pianist David Tudor became his essential long-term interpreter, premiering the vast majority of his piano and live-electronic works from the early 1950s on; alongside Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Christian Wolff, Cage was a central figure of the “New York School” of composers who gathered informally through the 1950s.
