Jaap Vink
Dutch composer and Institute of Sonology teacher known for feedback-based electronic music.
Jaap Vink (b. 1930, Den Helder) trained initially in engineering before taking electroacoustics courses at Delft University of Technology, and in 1961 established a pedagogical electronic-music studio at the Gaudeamus Foundation. From 1967 until his retirement in 1993 he was a staff teacher of analogue studio technique at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht. His own compositional method built dense, orchestral-scale textures from feedback networks — chains of tape recorders used as delay lines, run through filters and modulators — treated as a kind of live improvisation with the studio itself, rather than composition applied to it afterward. A 2017 Recollection GRM compilation gathers Utrecht pieces spanning 1968 to 1985, including Screen (1968), Granule (1970), and Tide 85 (1985).
