Herbert Brün (1918–2000) studied piano and composition under Stefan Wolpe at the Jerusalem Conservatory from 1936, having left Germany that year to escape Nazi persecution; he worked as a jazz pianist in Palestine before further study at Tanglewood and Columbia University from 1948 to 1950. He joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1963, where from 1968 to 1974 he co-taught courses on cybernetics, heuristics, composition, cognition, and social change with Heinz von Foerster at the Biological Computer Laboratory. Working in MUSICOMP and Fortran, he produced early computer-generated graphic scores and developed granular synthesis techniques in 1972. He received the Norbert Wiener Medal in 1993 and an honorary doctorate from Goethe University Frankfurt in 1999.
