The follow-up to The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, Tufte turns from statistical charts to the broader problem of representing multi-dimensional information — maps, diagrams, timetables, scientific illustration, and interface design — on a flat, static page. Self-published through his own Graphics Press in 1990 with the same production standard as his first book (dense color printing, generous format), it organizes its argument around techniques for “escaping flatland”: layering and separation, micro/macro readings, small multiples, and the visual narration of time and motion.
