Denis Charles (1933-1998) was a drummer born in St. Croix whose loose, melodic sense of pulse made him an early and longtime collaborator in Cecil Taylor’s groups, and a foundational voice in free jazz drumming. In 1963 he recorded live with Steve Lacy’s Monk-repertoire quartet, released in 1975 as School Days.
