Iannis Xenakis informally convened the Équipe de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales (EMAMu) in 1966, formalized in 1972 with French Ministry of Culture support as the Centre d’Études de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales (CEMAMu), in Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris. There, engineer Patrick Saint-Jean completed the UPIC graphic composition system under Xenakis’s direction in 1977.
