C.C.C.C.

Active from 1989 and named after a conceptual hierarchy of cosmic entities from psychonaut John C. Lilly, C.C.C.C. (Cosmic Coincidence Control Center) was a core Japanese noise quartet of Mayuko Hino, Hiroshi Hasegawa, Ryuichi Nagakubo, and Fumio Kosakai, releasing through labels including Endorphine Factory and Cold Spring. The group favored what it described as an emotive, cathartic approach to noise over the more conceptual, intellectual strategies of some European noise musicians; early recordings, made live on analogue equipment, were quieter than typical Japanoise releases before growing louder and more distorted through the 1990s. C.C.C.C. performed with Merzbow at a 1995 Tokyo concert later released as Tokyo Alive 1995, and appeared at Queen Elizabeth Hall for John Peel’s Meltdown festival in 1998.
