Bernard Parmegiani (1927–2013) studied mime under Jacques Lecoq from 1957 to 1961, an apprenticeship he later credited as important to his sense of gesture and timing as a composer, before moving into sound engineering. He joined the GRM in 1959 for a two-year masterclass shortly after its founding by Pierre Schaeffer, then took charge of the Music/Image unit for French state television (ORTF), collaborating there with composers including Iannis Xenakis. His acousmatic works of the period include Violostries (1964), for violin and tape, and the concert pieces Capture éphémère and L’Enfer (1967–1972), culminating in his best-known work, De Natura Sonorum (1975). He left the GRM in 1992 to establish his own studio in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
