Devo

American new wave group from Akron, Ohio, formed 1973, known for its satirical de-evolution concept and Brian Eno-produced debut.

Formed in Akron, Ohio, in 1973 by brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald and Bob Casale, Devo built its music and stage persona around a satirical concept of human “de-evolution,” fusing rock instrumentation with electronics, deadpan science-fiction imagery, and mordant social commentary. Brian Eno produced the group’s 1978 debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, for Warner Bros., helping translate the band’s confrontational live sound into a record now regarded as a founding document of American new wave.
