David Behrman

David Behrman, who holds a B.A. from Harvard and an M.A. from Columbia, co-founded the Sonic Arts Union with Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, and Gordon Mumma in 1966. Working at Columbia Records through the late 1960s, he produced the label’s “Music of Our Time” series — including the first recording of Terry Riley’s In C, along with works by Ashley, John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, and David Tudor — before turning increasingly to computer-mediated live electronics in his own compositions and scoring extensively for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1968 into the 2000s.
