Control voltage
The voltage signal itself that carries a control value between modules, as distinct from voltage control as a general idea.
A control voltage (CV) is the signal itself — a varying voltage patched between modules to carry a pitch, gain, or other control value — the concrete medium through which the broader idea of voltage control is realized. Different systems adopted different, incompatible CV conventions (see 1 V/octave pitch control and Hz/V pitch control), which is why “CV” names a family of practices rather than one standardized protocol.
