Conceived by composer Richard Felciano and founded in 1989 at UC Berkeley, CNMAT (Center for New Music and Audio Technologies) was built around an explicitly interdisciplinary mandate, drawing on Berkeley’s computer science, electrical engineering, and auditory perception research. David Wessel — arriving from IRCAM, where he had worked alongside Pierre Boulez — directed CNMAT from 1988 to 2005, a period that produced Open Sound Control among its widely adopted tools.
