Club d'Essai

Paris radio research club, renamed from the Studio d'Essai in 1946, where Pierre Schaeffer began musique concrète.

Renamed from the Studio d’Essai in 1946 under Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française, the Club d’Essai was where Pierre Schaeffer formally began his “research into noises” in 1948, premiering the results — the earliest musique concrète — in a concert that October. The Club’s Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète, formed in 1951, became the direct ancestor of the GRM.
