Chimera state

A pattern in a network of identical, coupled oscillators where one group locks into synchrony while another remains incoherent — impossible under purely local or purely global coupling.

A pattern that can arise in a network of identical oscillators coupled to their neighbors, in which one subpopulation locks into phase synchrony while another remains incoherent, drifting at differing frequencies — a coexistence impossible under either purely local or purely global coupling. Yoshiki Kuramoto and Dorjsuren Battogtokh first described the phenomenon in 2002 in a nonlocally-coupled oscillator lattice; Daniel Abrams and Steven Strogatz named it the “chimera state” in 2004, after the mismatched hybrid creature of Greek myth.
