Albert Ayler

American saxophonist; central figure in free jazz, known for raw tone and collective improvisation.

Albert Ayler (1936–1970) recast free jazz around raw tone, folk and march melody fragments, and collective improvisation. His trio session with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray, recorded July 10, 1964, became Spiritual Unity — the first jazz recording on Bernard Stollman’s newly founded ESP-Disk’ label.
